In an open letter to Mirek Topolanek, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and current holder of the EU presidency, Abdelmaksoud Rachdi, the chairman of the Euromed civil society platform, has urged the EU to recognise the aggressive nature of Israel's recent actions in Gaza. Despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an "immediate and durable" ceasefire, Israel continues its assault on Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinian civilians.
He argues that "the Israeli assault can not be considered as a reaction against any kind of potential threat; it is a pure military aggression that targets the lives of Gaza's civilians." "Moreover, refusing access to Gaza for international press journalists, against the explicit order of the Israeli Supreme court, maintains serious fears and doubts about Israel's denial of the existence of any actual humanitarian crisis that is taking place in Gaza." Many have expressed disappointment that US president-elect Barack Obama has made no statement condemning Israel's actions. "Obama's silence shows that he is just as biased towards Israel as Bush," commented Ibrahim Mansour, political analyst and managing editor-in-chief of independent daily Al-Dustour. "Like Bush, Obama's only role in the region will be to implement Israeli directives." Sources: |
