Dialogue between NGOs and the French Presidency on the upcoming UN international conference on Financing for Development
A High-level Dialogue between European civil society and the French Presidency on the Doha UN Conference on Financing for Development was held in Paris on 18 September 2008, shortly after the beginning of the negotiations on the Draft Outcome Document of Doha in New York and the Consultations between the EU Commission and the EU Member states on the EU Position for the Doha conference.
The Dialogue was organised by Action Mondiale Contre la Pauvreté (AMCP) in coordination with French and European NGO networks, and attended by a wide range of European and Southern civil society organisations including Eurostep. It was divided into four working sessions: illicit financial flows and tax evasion; international taxation; debt; systemic issues and Doha follow-up mechanisms. The debates provided an in-depth insight in the ongoing discussion, especially on technical issues at the EU and civil society levels. To enable a frank and open discussion the dialogue was held under Chatham House rules.
The event was judged highly successful and resulted in an invitation from the French Presidency for the NGO platforms to send two speakers to the Informal Meeting of European Development Ministers, which will be held on 29 and 30 September 2008 in Bordeaux, France.
